New York City’s Puerto Rican Population Experienced a Sharp Decline Between 2012 and 2022 While The Dominican Population Increased

Laird W. Bergad

The new LDP report unveiled notable changes in the demographics of New York City’s Puerto Rican and Dominican populations that reflect a significant decrease in the Puerto Rican population in New York City, particularly after 2017. This decline is attributed to factors such as migration to surrounding areas and other states, possibly influenced by the COVID-19 pandemic and economic challenges.

Latino Voter Participation in the 2018 and 2022 Midterm Elections

Laird W. Bergad

The new LDP report reveals that during the 2022 midterm elections, Latino voter participation rates were lower than other major racial groups in the US and lower than Latino voter participation rates in the 2018 midterm. The study author and CLACLS Executive Director, Distinguished Professor Laird W. Bergad,  found that nationally, only 37.9% of eligible Latino voters took part in the 2022 midterms, compared to 40.4% in the 2018 midterms. Despite this decline in the percentage of registered voters casting ballots in 2022, the percentage of Latinos registered to vote rose from 53.7% in 2018 to 57.8% in 2022.

Report 112 | May 2023

This latest LDP report authored by CLACLS Executive Director and Distinguished Professor Laird W. Bergad found that among the largest Latino nationalities in the New York metropolitan area, foreign-born Latinos were more likely to marry or partner within their particular national origin group than U.S.-born Latinos. There were significant variations in marriage/partner choices by nationality and a striking finding was that a majority of male and female Puerto Rican household heads married or partnered with non-Puerto Ricans in 2021.

Laird W. Bergad

Data released by the U.S. Census Bureau’s American Community Survey 2021 One-Year samples indicate that despite the catastrophic health impact of COVID on the Latino population of the region, there was not a mass exodus of Latinos from the City or the metro area. The 2021 ACS One-Year samples, when compared with previous ACS One-Year samples, indicate that the City’s overall population increased by 0.5% between 2018 and 2021 and 1.3% between 2019 and 2021.
