During the summer of 2018, I will be continuing my fieldwork research in Puerto Rico, specifically in the Santurce metro area of San Juan. As an anthropologist, I am interested in the semiotic ideologies shaping urban spaces, at the critical junction between local gentrification processes and global processes of dispossession. These questions have become more significant in the wake of Hurricane Maria. This summer, I will focus on documenting street art and graffiti in this area (in order to compare it with previous photographic documentation I have made since 2013). I will also conduct archival research in San Juan and Ponce to help contextualize my dissertation project.
