Gabriela Wiener in conversation with Ángeles Donoso Macaya, and Fátima Vélez

Atusparia (2024) tells the story of a leftist militant who ends up imprisoned in a high-security facility in the Amazon after becoming a victim of lawfare.
The protagonist adopts the name “Atusparia,” which refers both to the 19th-century Peruvian Indigenous leader and to the communist school where she was politically formed. The novel traces her trajectory from that early political education, through her activism, her conflicts within the left, and her downfall, to a moment of withdrawal in which she begins to question her origins and the meaning of political struggle. The book blends elements of political fiction, autobiography, and satire to explore the contradictions of revolutionary projects. It offers a reflection on the Latin American left and on the importance of affective ties in political formation.
