  • Transnational Latin American and Caribbean Communities in the U.S.

One history course

  • Precolonial/Colonial Latin American and Caribbean History
  • National Period Latin American and Caribbean History

One course in language and literature

  • Spanish American Literature of the Conquest
  • Spanish American Colonial Literature
  • Spanish American Novel Since 1960
  • Modern Spanish American Essay

Five courses (15 credits) on Latin America, the Caribbean, or Latino Studies to be selected from those offered at the The Graduate Center by Ph.D. programs in Anthropology, Art History, Comparative Literature, Economics, Hispanic and Luso-Brazilian Literatures and Languages, History, Linguistics, Music, Political Science, Sociology, and Theatre.

Language Proficiency:

Spanish or Portuguese, or (only in special cases) French or Dutch

MALS Thesis:

Supervised by a faculty adviser
