Lanallwe is an autobiographical essay. Drawing from a collection of inherited instant photos, the narrator attempts to reconstruct the history, or her own history, of the house on Lake Lanallwe, where she spent summers of her childhood with her family. Through examining what is both shown and concealed in these photographs, a profound exercise in memory takes place. In this process, multiple perspectives converge, bringing back both family memories and the territorial dispossession suffered by the Mapuche people since colonial times.

“In this essential narrative about belonging and possession, what begins as an innocent childhood memory (in the lakeside house, in southern Chile) gradually turns into an indictment against the dispossession of Mapuche lands. Ángeles Donoso Macaya writes with restraint and, above all, with the dual sense of courage: the anger of realizing being part of a deceit and the bravery to examine the family implications of such expropriation.” – Lina Meruane.
Y esto: “Through the examination and reexamination of an old family photograph, Ángeles Donoso Macaya writes a bold and lucid book about what remains within the frame—the nostalgic memories of her childhood by the lake—and the uncomfortable and violent out-of-focus of the territorial dispossession of the Mapuche people. A book that questions what is remembered and what is chosen to be forgotten.” – Alia Trabuco
