Since the 2000s, various countries in Latin America, including Argentina, Colombia, Uruguay, Chile, and Brazil, have enacted measures to combat LGBTIphobia through policies and legislation. These initiatives have been spurred by both pressure from social movements and the adoption of recommendations from international agencies. The progress of LGBTQI+ and feminist agendas within public policies has incited conservative reactions, often associated with the dedemocratization processes intertwined with neoliberalism. The convergence of economic and religious sectors against issues such as sexual rights and reproductive rights is not novel but has intensified in response to these advancements, bolstering the emergence of the New Right in Latin America and resulting in legislative regressions in several countries. This anti-gender offensive involves a multitude of actors, and comprehending their interplay within Latin America is crucial for grasping the origins of hate speech and its repercussions on democracy in the LAC region.
